Gubeša - Korčula (42° 58.4'N; 16° 41'E)

The island of Gubeša can be found on the northern side of Zaljev Vela Luka, the inlet on the western side of Korčula island where you will also find the town of Vela Luka. Gubeša is situated 3 NM west of Vela Luka and just east of the bay Uvala Meja.

Behind the island you can find a lagoon, 4 - 6 metres deep and with a sandy bottom. Excellent for anchoring with good holding. The lagoon is well protected against wind and waves from the north and east. However, wind and waves from the south and west can cause a nasty swell and this bay. It is not a safe place to be in westerly winds (just like Vela Luka itself).

(c) HHI. Not to be used for navigation.

Apart from the large number of holiday homes around this bay, it is a quite close encounter to the original 'Bounty Lagoon' feeling. Caution: The small island on the south side of the lagoon is now an artificial peninsula, connected to mainland Korčula via a stone dam. Not all electronic charts show this vital piece of information. See the picture on the right below.

Caution: Artificial peninsula!
