Luka Polace (42° 47'N; 17° 23E)

The bay of Luka Polace can be found on the north-western side of Mljet. This is a wonderful and well-protected bay, with lots of space and high hills that will protect you against all winds. Because of its typical shape and its protected entrances there is hardly any swell in this bay. Exception is the Bura wind, but this will not reach as far as the most inner parts of the cove.

We dropped anchor in the deepest part of Luka Polace, in Rogač cove. On its south-eastern shores you find the small village of Polace, a single line of 30 – 40 houses / restaurants. You will find a bakery and a small supermarket here. Furthermore, some 10 yachts can moor stern to the quay here, and there is some water and electricity available. The bay is part of the Mljet National Parc. This means that you have to pay the parc entrance fee for anchoring here. It is collected by boat by Parc rangers. Entrance fee in 2009 was 90 kuna per person (EUR 12,50).

Rogač is quite a deep bay, we anchored in 12 meters of water. The sandy bottom provides an excellent holding ground. It is safe to moor quite close to the steep coast, stern-to with two mooring lines. The cove has space for over 20 yachts.

Luka Polace has three entrances. The most easterly one is safest. The westerly one has a reef halfway the passage in. At some places there is less than 5 meters of depth. Be careful to keep to the centre of the channel, and take care of the ‘teeth’ that are sticking out of the water towards the western shore. The central entrance also has some shallow areas.

Pomena, on the western shore of Mljet, can be a reasonable alternative for Luka Polace.
